Adair Air Force Station closed in September 1969. By then, the Air Force's SAGE air-defense mission had become obsolete as the primary threat shifted from enemy aircraft to intercontinental ballistic missiles. The headquarters of the 26th Air Division was subsequently moved to Luke Air Force Base in Arizona. 

But the property did not simply disappear.

After the Air Force left:

1970: The remaining Adair Air Force Station property was declared excess and began the process of being transferred to other government agencies, organizations, and private interests. 

1971–1973: There was considerable discussion about what should happen to the abandoned station. Proposals included using it for education, housing, government operations, and training. 

1972: Benton County received a substantial portion of the former Air Force Station property. Other portions went to other public and private organizations. 

1973: The community that had grown around the former Air Force housing was formally platted as Adair Village.

1976: Adair Village was incorporated as a city. The former Air Force housing became privately owned residences, helping form the core of the modern community. 

What happened to the buildings?

This is probably the most interesting part for your Camp Adair history.

A number of the buildings that had been used by the Air Force survived the closure. Former Air Force buildings and facilities were transferred or sold to different organizations. Today, former Air Force Station structures are associated with:

  • Adair Village

  • Santiam Christian School

  • Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife

  • Benton County

  • Private residences and businesses

  • Other public and private organizations

The City of Adair Village specifically notes that the former Air Force housing and other station buildings now form the nucleus of the modern city. 

There was also a significant BOMARC missile connection. The Air Force selected Adair as a location for a BOMARC missile base in 1959, and construction actually began, but the project was cancelled before the launch facility became operational. Some of the infrastructure remained at the site.
